Vipps is the dominant mobile payment app in Norway and is used for everything from paying friends to shopping online and in stores. Getting familiar with it is a key step to managing your finances and social life.
What is Vipps?
Vipps is a mobile payment service that allows you to send and receive money using just a phone number, rather than a bank account number. It’s owned by a consortium of major Norwegian banks and is widely used across the country.
How to get Vipps
To use Vipps, you need to meet a few requirements:
- A Norwegian National ID number or a D-number.
- A Norwegian phone number.
- A Norwegian bank account and an associated debit card.
- A BankID (digital ID) to verify your identity.
Once you have these, you can download the Vipps app from your app store and follow the registration steps

How to Use Vipps
Person-to-Person Payments: This is what Vipps is most known for. You can easily “Vipps” a friend money for lunch or a gift by simply entering their phone number and the amount.
Shopping: Many stores, online shops, and even small businesses (like at a flea market or a club event) use Vipps. You can pay by scanning a QR code or by entering a business’s unique Vipps number.
Bill Payments: You can often receive and pay bills (eFaktura) directly in the app, making it simple to manage your finances.
Contactless Payments: Many modern card terminals in stores support “Tæpp with Vipps,” which allows you to pay with your phone without even opening the app.
